Frequently Asked Questions

Application/Selection

When is the application deadline?
All application materials, including recommendation letters, must be submitted by September 10, 2012.  Application materials can be found here.  Please note that incomplete application packets will not be screened or considered. No applications are being accepted at the moment.

How many participants does NHLI select each year?
Each class includes 22 Latinas from across the country, reflecting diverse geographic and Hispanic subgroup representation.

How will the class members be selected?
Each application is carefully read and scored by the members of the Selection Committee. The Selection Committee is made up of a diverse group of alumnae of NHLI during the first round of the selection process.  Participants selected during the first round will be invited to participate in one-on-one interviews with members of the Selection Committee.

When will I know if I am selected?
At this time all applicants have been selected.
All applicants will be notified by October 12, 2012 if they have been selected to participate in the program.

If I am currently unemployed, or a full-time student can I still apply?
No, the program is not appropriate for women who are full-time students, seeking elected office or are going through professional or personal transition.  It requires a considerable time commitment and the full attention of all participants during the training sessions.

If I currently have less than 10 years of professional experience, can I apply?
No. We ask that all applicants meet 100% of the requirements.

If I am not selected for the 2013 program year, can I reapply again the following year?
If you still meet the program requirements, we encourage you to reapply.  NHLI allocates four (4) additional points in the selection evaluation scale to previous applicants.

Are application fees refundable?
No, applcations fees cannot be refunded.

Miscellaneous

Will I have any free time to explore and venture out on my own during the training session?
There will be no time allotted to explore the respective cities during the program session. Our program is an intensive, long-days experience and requires participants' complete and undivided attention. NHLI asks that all participants follow the agenda and stay with the group at all times.  Extended stays following the completion of the training week are at the expense of each individual.

If I have outside responsibilities (job, school, family, etc.), will I be able to step away for portions of the program?
Participants must attend all sessions in order to graduate from the program. We require that all participants dedicate 100% of their time and attention throughout the program.   Participants will be expected to keep all electronic devices stored away and not used during any presentation or activity.   There will be time at the end of the day to check in with outside responsibilities.

Is there a dress code?
We ask our participants to bring business attire. There will also be opportunities to wear casual clothing and business casual attire.
