Frequently Asked Questions

Application/Selection

When is the application deadline?
All application materials, including recommendation letters, must be submitted by December 11, 2013. Application materials can be found here.  Please note that incomplete application packets will not be screened or considered.

How many participants will NHLI select each year?
NHLI will select 18 Latinas from across the country, reflecting diverse geographic and Hispanic subgroup representation.

How will the class members be selected?
Each application is carefully read and scored by the members of the Selection Committee. The Selection Committee is made up of a diverse group of alumnae of NHLI during the first round of the selection process.  Participants selected during the first round will be invited to participate in one-on-one interviews with members of the Selection Committee.

When will I know if I am selected?
All applicants will be notified by January 16, 2014 if they have been selected to participate in the program.

If I am currently unemployed, or a full-time student can I still apply?
No, the program is not appropriate for women who are full-time students, seeking elected office or are going through professional or personal transition.  It requires a considerable time commitment and the full attention of all participants during the training sessions.

If I currently have less than 10 years of professional experience, can I apply?
No. We ask that all applicants meet 100% of the requirements.

If I am not selected for the 2014 program year, can I reapply again the following year?
If you still meet the program requirements, we encourage you to reapply.  NHLI allocates four (4) additional points in the selection evaluation scale to previous applicants.

What if I need to defer my acceptance?

Deferments can only be made for the special circumstances such as death in the family, pregnancy, or long-term illness. If your reason to defer does not meet this standard, you must reapply the following year.

Are there tuition payment plans available?
Monthly tuition payment plans are available upon request and evaluated on a case by case basis. If enrolled in a monthly payment plan, all tuition must be paid by Week 4 of the Executive Leadership Program. Otherwise, tuition must be paid in full by January 24, 2014.

Are application fees refundable?
No, applcations fees cannot be refunded.

Program Content

When/where does the Executive Leadership Program take place?
The Executive Leadership Program has four one-week training sessions which take place in various locations. The first week will take place in a retreat venue in California from February 9th through 15th, 2014. The other weeks will be held at: Harvard John F. Kennedy School of Government in March, Center for Creative Leadership (location/date to be decided by the individual participant), and Washington, DC in October.

Where do participants stay during the program?
Depending on the city and training session, participants will be staying either at retreat centers or local hotels. Participants are expected to stay at the designated location and cannot make changes to the residence location.

What does a typical day during the program look like?
The program is designed with long days, usually from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. The content varies from day to day during the leadership training sessions and will include various activities. Payment should be arranged for and made directly to the CCL.

Miscellaneous

Will I have any free time to explore and venture out on my own during the training session?
There will be no time allotted to explore the respective cities during the program session. Our program is an intensive, long-days experience and requires participants' complete and undivided attention. NHLI asks that all participants follow the agenda and stay with the group at all times.  Extended stays following the completion of the training week are at the expense of each individual.

If I have outside responsibilities (job, school, family, etc.), will I be able to step away for portions of the program?
Participants must attend all sessions in order to graduate from the program. We require that all participants dedicate 100% of their time and attention throughout the program.   Participants will be expected to keep all electronic devices stored away and not used during any presentation or activity.   There will be time at the end of the day to check in with outside responsibilities.

Is there a dress code?
We ask our participants to bring business attire. There will also be opportunities to wear casual clothing and business casual attire.
