What you need to
know about getting on a Board of Directors
Mainstream
organizations are struggling to fill Board of Director slots with talented
minorities, and in particular women. But getting on a Board is only half the challenge;
once you are there, you are expected to perform. It’s important for Latinas to serve on community as well
as national boards, and ensure the Latina/o voice is at the table when making
important policy and resource allocation decisions. It is also important to find a good match to your
interests and skills. Learn how
organizations recruit and what they are looking for in potential Board
candidates, how to network yourself into a prestigious national board, and
once you are there what you are expected to deliver, and how you decide which
board is the best fit for you. |

Latinas in
Politics: Should I run? Where do I start?
Latinas lag behind
as active participants in the political process in this country. Traditional family and cultural
prejudices about women in politics are strong in our communities, and
although we have made great strides in the past few years, we still have a
way to go in building a base of talented, prepared-to-run, connected and
motivated Latinas to run for elected office. Participants will discuss the roles of Latinas as
community activists, leaders and decision-makers and how to translate these
into an elected position. This
workshop will help you:
- Identify obstacles – real or imagined
– that Latinas face when running for elected office
- Explore if you are ready to run for public
office and how to get started
- List practical tasks and activities to help
you get started in the political path, if that is your desire.
