Hundreds of local and national Hispanic leaders are expected to gather in Albuquerque, New Mexico during the first week of November to celebrate the accomplishments of women.
The National Hispana Leadership Institute's 2009 Executive Leadership Training Conference and Mujer Awards will be held Nov. 5-6 at the Hotel Albuquerque at Old town, 800 Rio Grande Boulevard, NM.
"This year's conference theme, 'Our Time in History,' reflects the important times we are living when more and more Latinas are advancing to significant positions of leadership and national influence," said Cristina López, NHLI's President, in a prepared statement.
López noted that the recent accomplishment of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis were exciting examples of the strides women have made in recent years.
Still, there's a long way to go, she said.
"The conference provides the opportunity to gain the skills needed to continue to shatter the glass ceiling and strategize on how to move forward," López said.
The two-day workshop will feature educational and inspirational speakers, networking opportunities and expert-facilitated workshops.
The National Hispana Leadership Institute exists to help prepare Hispanic women for positions of national and international influence, public policy impact and contribute to the advancement of the Hispanic community, the group states.
Some celebrities will also be in attendance.
Actress and activist Rosie Perez will receive the Chair's Award. In addition, corporate executive Patricia Diaz Dennis and Emma Sepulveda, an award-winning author and professor at the University of Nevada will be honored with the National and Regional Mujer Awards.
The organization will also recognize award-winning broadcast journalist Soledad O'Brien, host of CNN's Latino in America, for her journalistic coverage of the Hispanic community.
The event will also include Town Hall-style meetings focused on health care, as well as a career fair and corporate expo.
